The Mission

The Academy Institute of the Visual Arts helps the student build a strong foundation and develop the student's own unique style in painting and drawing.  Our goal is to educate, inform, and help prepare students for a career in the visual arts.  Our mission is also to advance the skill of individuals that want to develop their talents in a collegiate style format without the pressure or intimidation of working with advanced students and skillset.

Another goal of the Academy Institute is to cultivate a student's skills for the professional career they are seeking, as well as train individuals to paint as an experienced artist.

How students are taught

Tools of the Trade: Let's begin

Learning how to draw, illustrate, paint or create images or sculptures does not begin with just showing the fundamentals of the visual arts to the student.  It begins with "The Tools of the Trade" as well as posture and how these tool are applies. In most secondary levels of education in the visual arts, the student is usually only drawing with a 2B pencil and is "good enough". In college or university levels, most of the tools are generally talked about, but most classes or professors do not delve into the history or make up of the tools.  Generally they focus just on the  terminology of these tools.

Learning the fundamentals

If a student does not have a strong foundation of understanding and practice in the fundamentals of the visual arts, the student will fail in their work. Like a structure that is built on a weak foundation, it will collapse. This works the same way in the studio arts.  Understanding the basics such as perspective, color theory, composition, negative space, and motion in the image is paramount to becoming an effective fine artist or illustrator. at the academy institute, these principles are taught to the student so that these theories become second nature in their studies.

Entering the intermediate stage

When a student moves past the understanding of the tools of the trade and the fundamental principles of the visual arts they are now ready to move into development of technique and form. At this stage the student is introduced to the emotion of the visual arts.  This can be a complicated transition to make.  In learning the emotional part of the arts the students is moving past the rendering of the arts, in other words not just illustrating an image but placing emotion and thought into the image as so the view will see, feel and at times be transfix into the image.  This is not an easy stage to learn nor is it an easy stage to teach.

The advanced stage of the arts

Understanding and development

This stage of development is where the student now understands what they are getting across to the viewer.  They are now showing emotion in their work or development in an area of telling a story and are now becoming an illustrator or developing in the area of the fine arts.  Those students who want to illustrate are more than likely to move into the area of designing of sets, automobiles, props for motion pictures, interior design, architecture, fashion design or even develop their skills in the motion picture or commercial field in direction or motion picture development. As far as the fine arts area this could lead the student into marketing their work on line and galleries throughout the area, nation or world.  Museum studies could also be an area in which the student may lead such as art history where art tells us where we have been, who we are, and where we could be heading as a culture, civilization and subculture.  These issues in the arts run parallel to our live today.

Painting, Drawing for Galleries & commisions

When the student moves into the area of "FINE ARTS", they are developing the emotional side of the arts.  In many cases it could  mean delving into the areas of deep hidden emotions.  This become more relevant with student in the late adolescent early adult hood stage of life.  In these areas students find it hard to express themselves in words and in many cases these young students find the fine arts as a release of emotions such as anger, rage, frustration, confusion and even sorrow. These emotions also can be expressed in happiness , joy, elation as well. It is here the student will sometime find an area of comfort and expression that even they themselves do not know how to express.

Illustration, advertising and Design

At this level of the arts the student begins an intense study in illustration and the importance of deadlines, presentation, the strict format and demands of working with the client.  At this point it is no longer just drawing unicorns, butterflies, and rainbows.  it is the area of a fast pace and tough work ethics.  In this arena you will find the artist is judged on first impressions, and they learn that you are only as good as the last job you presented. This is where the student learns that their reputation can carry them far or they can crash and burn and in some cases never recover. this is also the arena where the student learns about character design such as the basics in animation.  How to develop characters that appeal to a demographic the artist is aiming for. This is also an area in which the student may have a chance for an apprenticeship to Professor Jacinto in the areas of set design and development, editing in you tube or even basic animation.  The student will learn about package design and demographic targeting including areas of advertising in billboard design and shadowing the professor in meetings with the client.  This level can also prepare the student for further education at the college level and for colleges such as ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN IN PASADINA CALIFORNIA, THE ROHDE ISLAND ART INSTITUTE, THE KANSAS CITY ART INSTITUTE, OR THE ACADEMY OF THE ARTS IN SAN FRANSICO.
